BID St Andrews, the University of St Andrews and Fife Council welcome Pop In the City
After participating in many races, Marie Arbeille, Clémentine Charles and Sophie de l’Epine created Pop In the City in 2012. It is a feminine urban race that allows hundreds of participants to discover a European city in an unforgettable way several times a year. Whatever the city – Porto, Bologna, Hamburg, Geneva or Paris, the rules remain the same: for 8 hours, the participants, in teams of two, will have to complete up to 30 challenges all around town. Authenticity, local experiences and encounters are Pop In the City’s key success factors.
For the first time, Pop In the City will take place in the UK. The participants – the Popins – will dive into the medieval history of the Kingdom of Fife and enjoy the delights of St Andrews.
Pop In St Andrews will take place on Saturday, 15 June 2019 and will see 500 female participants - aged between 18 to 63 years old – compete in pairs over 30 challenges which are split into 5 categories of art, sport, extreme, charity and culture.
The Pop In the City events have been hugely popular across Europe and have a loyal and enthusiastic following. Pop In St Andrews attracted a large number of Popins from overseas who cannot wait to visit Fife and to experience the charm, history and culture of St Andrews which is globally renowned for golf, its royal connections and as home of the third-oldest University in the English-speaking world.
Popins may attempt a famous Scottish caber toss, meet a passionate craftsman to carve wood, experience falconry in plains running along the wild coast, abseil down the side of a cliff, dance to the unique sound of the bagpipes, try putting at the famous Himalaya golf course or have a sip of traditional Scotch whisky as they progress from challenge to challenge. The Popins will have to demonstrate curiosity, courage and strategy in order to complete as many challenges as possible.
Clémentine Charles, co-founder of Pop In the City, said: “We are very excited to work on a Scottish Pop In in the beautiful city of St Andrews and create challenges together with locals in order to highlight its charm and history. Since we announced St Andrews as the destination, we have received lots of positive feedback from Popins who are looking forward to doing a Pop In the City in the UK and are thrilled to come to Scotland”.
Jane Kennedy, BID St Andrews Manager, said: “the BID were instrumental in bringing the event to the UK for the first time and hope to introduce this amazing group of Urban Challengers to the people, the business and the Culture of St Andrews and show how much we have to offer in addition to our world famous golf courses. Our hope is to develop an emotional bond and legacy with this year’s Popins and give them a taste of what Fife, and St Andrews in particular, has to offer and we will anticipate their return in future years as visitors, students and business women alike”.
The University of St Andrews is a key stakeholder and sponsor of the event and it will play a major role in the organization of the race as well as in promoting the architectural heritage and sport culture. Moreover, the University kindly provides accommodation for Popins.
Ann Camus, Founder of Fife Tourism Partnership added: “I’m thrilled the UK’s first Pop in the City will be taking place in St. Andrews, attracting visitors on an international, national, regional and local scale which will continue to boost a prospering tourism landscape. Fife Tourism Partnership has been instrumental in securing early commitment from supporting partners and it’s fantastic St. Andrews has been recognised as the number one location to launch the UK’s first Pop in the City challenge”.
Debbie Maccallum, Chair of Tourism St Andrews (the Local Tourist Association) said: “Pop In St Andrews promises to be a key event not only for St Andrews in 2019 but for Fife and for Scotland. We will certainly be able to provide the visiting Popins with a wonderful experience and a truly warm welcome which St Andrews is renowned for globally. This is such an exciting event for St Andrews to host and we cannot wait to welcome our Pop In the City challengers”.
Ticket sales opened online on 13 December and the 500 bibs for Pop In St Andrews sold out within 5 days. In each edition, about 70 volunteers come to join the organization team and enjoy the ambiance of the race.
