Film tourism is a growing global trend, and with film and TV being one of the main reasons that 40% of people visit the UK, Scotland is capitalising on this opportunity. To top it all, Scotland has recently been voted the world's Best Cinematic Destination in an online poll run by one of America's biggest newspapers.
Fife has been swept up in all the showbiz glamour, by starring in the major US TV series Outlander – a historical drama that follows the story of a 1940s nurse as she goes back in time to 1740s Scotland.
Fife's stunning scenery and striking landscapes feature heavily, with many scenes shot at different locations including Aberdour Castle, Falkland Palace, Balgonie Castle, Limekilns, Dysart and the historic village of Culross.
It's not just about the glitz and glamour, Outlander has generated incredible interest from fans wanting to follow in the footsteps of the lead actors.
To maximise the benefits of Outlander, VisitScotland has been working closely with West Fife Tourism Association and Fife Council to promote the region with inclusions on an Outlander map, activity for the travel trade around VisitScotland Expo and partnership activity in Germany.
Great results so far include:
• Almost 250,000 visits to the Outlander dedicated webpage on visitscotland.com
• 175,000 downloads of Outlander map
• Attractions and tour operators have noticed a marked increase in business on the back of the series
Here's some interesting facts about Outlander to give you the scale of its following and growing popularity.
Did you know that each episode of Outlander was watched by 5 million people in the USA? Or that it has won the PEOPLE'S CHOICE award for Best Cable Scifi/Fantasy series, beating Game of Thrones, Walking Dead and Dr Who? Or that nine different Outlander hashtags and keywords trended on Twitter either worldwide or in the US?
How do I get involved?
Well, Outlander is literally on your doorstep – why not shout about it to your visitors.
Promote the map and the rich content available on visitscotland.com. Could you do an Outlander themed package or make the most of the social media noise trending worldwide?
