Bakery Students Get a Taste of Brussels

Fri 21 Apr 17

Fife College bakery students got the chance of a life time recently, to visit one of the biggest chocolate events in the world – Salon du Chocolat in Brussels.

The event showcases chocolatiers from around the world and the students, who are all studying NQ Bakery Level 5, got the chance to witness first-hand the latest methods and techniques.

The event was organised by lecturer Barry Scott who accompanied the students to the event. Said Barry: "The trip was a great success and it was inspiring for me to see the students experience patisserie and confectionary at such a high level as well as the different culture and travel all of which is a very valuable learning experience."

Three of the students, Conor Leckie, Louise Page and Jordan Malcolm had been awarded a £500 scholarship to share at the end of last year by Savour St Andrews and used this to help fund their trip.

Student Andrew Thomson (17) from Glenrothes thoroughly enjoyed the trip and said: "I had a great experience going to Brussels and going to the Salon du Chocolat. It showed me what work can be done with chocolate and the various jobs within the Industry. It was a trip I really enjoyed and will never forget."

Students Teagan Hailstones (18) and Steve Brown (32), also from Glenrothes were equally enthusiastic about their experience. Teagan said: "It wasn't just the chocolates that were fascinating, getting the chance to visit a new city and exploring the surroundings was also very interesting."

Student, Steve Brown, felt that the trip gave him a renewed motivation in his studies:

Said Steve: "The chance to see another part of the world and the different culture was an experience in itself; however to see the skills and craftsmanship on show at the Salon du Chocolat was a real joy and something to aim towards."

The Culinary Arts department is excited to be launching a new course for this year - Level 6 Patisserie and Bakery which is open for application now. For further details about full-time courses starting after the summer visit or call 0344 2480115.
